Cyprus fell under British rule without a shot being fired. Disraeli induced
the Sultan to cede the island for a lease deal. In exchange, Britain
undertook to defend Turkey against Russian advances in the Mediterranian.

The British residency in Kabul headed by Major Sir Louise Cavagnari and his escort of 75 Indian troops were attacked by Afghan soldiers.
The residency was destroyed and all of its defenders massacred.
